Phil Angelides, former state Democratic Party chairman, has dropped plans to run for lieutenant governor but said this week he intends to run for state treasurer.

Angelides said he will formally announce his candidacy when Treasurer Kathleen Brown declares her candidacy for governor.

Angelides has been testing his support for months. For most of that time, he was considering a run for lieutenant governor but had a formidable opponent for the Democratic nomination in Gray Davis.
