South Pasadena : Funds for Crossing Guards
Council members voted Wednesday to restore funds to the city budget for crossing guards when school starts and considered extending the city’s 5% utility tax to cable television and cellular telephones.
The City Council amended the city budget to reinstate $44,000 for 10 crossing guards for South Pasadena Unified School District schools. Council members also considered applying the city’s utility tax to cellular telephones and cable television to raise an additional $82,000.
Council members will vote on the utility tax extension Sept. 15.
The amended budget adopted by the council has a $177,269 deficit that by June will have to be made up from reserves or additional revenue.
City officials say $100,000 of the deficit is due to the loss of sales tax from the closure of the city’s Builder’s Emporium.
Chamber of Commerce officials told the council that five retailers had expressed interest in the hardware store site on Fair Oaks Avenue.
The city was facing a $289,269 deficit. However, city officials say, another $112,000 will be saved from reduced payments to Public Employees Retirement Service this year.
