Phony Pleas for West Covina Firefighters

WEST COVINA — Fire Chief Richard E. Greene said residents and business owners should be wary of anyone seeking donations on behalf of West Covina firefighters.
Some residents have complained to the West Covina Fire Department that they have received telephone calls from people claiming to be firefighters seeking donations, Fire Department officials say.
West Covina police arrested two juveniles this week when they arrived at a residence and attempted to collect a donation that had been arranged by telephone, Detective Dan Brooks said.
Brooks said police are searching for an adult suspect who made the call.
The caller explained that the money would go to keep a fire awareness program alive.
Authorities have yet to decided whether to prosecute the juveniles, who were released to their parents.
Anyone who has received such a solicitation is asked to call Brooks at (818) 814-8510.
