Hurry Up and Wait

Share

All things come round to him who will but wait. Like buses, trains and planes. OK, so maybe Longfellow wasn’t thinking about the empty time that--by some cosmic law--must precede travel. But why is it that being on the go involves so much standing still--especially on holiday weekends like this? And how does one fill that void--besides keeping an eye on the clock? Well, in Los Angeles, clockwise from top left, one man blocks out the world with a handkerchief while waiting for his plane at the International Terminal at LAX; another tired soul puts his luggage to good use at Union Station; Bobby Thompson of Baltimore has music to keep him company as he waits for a bus to Seattle at the downtown bus depot; Jose Lara, left in photo, and Rafael Murillo both think along the same lines at the downtown bus station; Iris Ortega of Bell Gardens, also at the bus station, finds solitude in a book; for Brian Boyce of Rancho Cucamonga work begins long before his train comes in; and at this bus stop at Third and Fairfax all eyes are on traffic.
