BASEBALL DAILY REPORT : ANGELS : Davis Gets Closer to Goal of 100 RBIs

Share

Chili Davis slammed the first pitch he saw from Toronto starter Pat Hentgen in the fifth inning over the right-field fence for his 20th home run. In the seventh, Davis singled to score Luis Polonia, pushing his runs batted in to 93, matching his career best set in 1991 and ’88.

Nice, he said, but his goal is 100 RBIs and always has been.

“One hundred would mean a lot more,” he said. “Right now, Tim Salmon (who has 90 RBIs) and I both have a chance to drive in 100. Today was just two closer to 100. When you’re an RBI guy, you want to say you’ve driven in 100-plus.”

Davis’ career high for homers is 29 set in 1991 as a member of the Minnesota Twins.

Davis on the Angels’ future: “This year for the organization was one for experimenting. They should have a pretty good idea of what guys can do and put together a team around a nucleus for next year. Now it’s not so much youth anymore. They’ve proven they can play at the major league level.” . . . Davis on his future: “I’d like to stick around here. Whether it’s going to be feasible to keep playing here is another story. But you never really play just for the money.” . . . Chad Curtis extended his hitting streak to a career-best 18 games.
