Virus Research Award
Costa Mesa-based ICN Pharmaceuticals Inc. is hosting a black-tie affair next month to hand out $50,000 to a British doctor. But it is not something one can drive to--that is, unless you live in London.
On Sept. 28, the company, maker of the anti-viral drug, Virazole, is honoring a British physician John James Skehel for his work in the field of virology.
Dr. Skehel, director of the National Institute for Medical Research in London, will receive the award, known as the ICN International Prize for Virology, for his contributions in the treatments of influenza.
“He has done some pioneering work to better understand the influenza virus,” said ICN spokesman Paul Knopick.
It is the fifth time that the prize has been awarded to leaders in the fight against viruses, Knopick said.
The prize winner is selected by a six-member committee made up of high-ranking physicians and professors at Harvard Medical School, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Stanford University, Karolinska University in Norway, Duke University and the Royal Cancer Hospital in London.
