Dobson Earns LPGA Victory

Helen Dobson, a 22-year-old tour rookie from England, defeated Dottie Mochrie on the fifth playoff hole Monday to win the LPGA State Farm Rail Golf Classic at Springfield, Ill.

It was Dobson’s first victory.

Mochrie missed an 18-foot putt on the par-five, 531-yard 17th, giving Dobson the victory.

Soccer

At least 20 were killed during celebrations after Colombia’s 5-0 victory over Argentina on Sunday that qualified Colombia for the 1994 World Cup. . . The Union of European Football Assns. barred European soccer champion Olympique Marseille from defending its title because of bribery allegations stemming from last season’s French League championship.

Donnie Boyce, 20, the leading scorer on the Colorado basketball team the past two seasons, was arrested Saturday in Boulder, Colo., for allegedly interfering with a police officer’s investigation, Boulder police said.

In a separate incident early Sunday, campus police in Boulder arrested Thadus Swazer and Keenan Gardner, both 18-year-old Colorado football players, for investigation of several charges, including conspiracy to commit felony menacing and carrying a concealed weapon.

South Carolina quarterback Steve Taneyhill was arrested on an underage drinking charge Sunday night, a day after leading his team to an upset of Georgia. Taneyhill, 20, was picked up at a student apartment near the school’s Columbia campus.

Weng Qingzhang, deputy secretary general of the Chinese Assn. of Sports Medicine, disputed suggestions that performance-enhancing drugs were responsible for the success of China’s athletes at last month’s World Championships. Chinese women swept the 1,500, 3,000 and 10,000 meters and the team won a total of four gold medals at Stuttgart, Germany. . . . World high-jump champion Ioamnet Quintero of Cuba underwent surgery to repair a torn Achilles’ tendon in a meet at Brussels Friday.

Motor Racing

A second child of race driver Paul Dutton died from injuries caused by a wheel that flew off a race car into a grandstand Saturday night in Wichita, Kan.

Josh Dutton, 9, died about 10 a.m. at HCA Wesley Medical Center, a hospital spokeswoman said. His sister, Amanda Dutton, 7, died early Sunday.

John Force of Yorba Linda won his first NHRA U.S. Nationals funny-car title at Indianapolis Raceway Park. Force covered the quarter-mile in a track-record 5.102 seconds at 289.29 m.p.h.
