COLLEGE FOOTBALL / DAILY REPORT : UCLA : Changes Made in Secondary

Share

UCLA began what Coach Terry Donahue agreed was a “week of repair” after a 27-25 loss to California, rather than a week of preparation for Nebraska, which the Bruins play on Sept. 18 after a Saturday off.

One of the repairs was to the defensive secondary.

Marvin Goodwin, a starter last season at strong safety but moved to free safety this season, has been moved back in what Donahue called an “experiment that didn’t work.”

Travis Collier, who had played on five-back coverages, will move into the starting lineup at free safety, with Donovan Gallatin going from the starting lineup to reserve status and participation on passing downs.

Donahue on the possibility Nebraska I-back Calvin Jones, whom the Cornhuskers are pitching for the Heisman Trophy, is out for two or three weeks because of a knee injury:

“I hope it’s three. I don’t mean it in a mean way, but I’d prefer he was out for our game. I hope he returns to full health Sunday following our game.”

The injured list: Wide receiver Mike Nguyen is doubtful for the Nebraska game because of strained knee ligaments, but UCLA hopes to have Bryan Adams back. He missed the loss to California because of a torn hamstring. Starting tailback Daron Washington will not practice this week because of a sprained ankle, but Sharmon Shah, who is recuperating from arthroscopic knee surgery, might be ready for Nebraska.
