OXNARD : Ormond Beach Task Force Defines Role
A task force created to deal with an Irvine development company’s proposals to build a 4,100-home community near ecologically valuable wetlands at an Oxnard beach agreed Wednesday to limit its duties to those of information gathering.
The Ormond Beach Task Force, which some feared might take on the role of an advocate in the proposal, will serve as a forum for sharing and exchanging information, ideas and resources relating to the project, members said.
“The task force has reaffirmed its mission statement,” said Russ Baggerly, a member of the task force and senior administrative assistant to county Supervisor Maria VanderKolk.
The Baldwin Co. wants to build a community of homes, condominiums, stores, a park and a school on 2,100 acres at Ormond Beach. The proposal will go before the Oxnard City Council for review Sept. 28.
Robert Burns, president of the Baldwin Co., said he is pleased with the task force’s decision to forgo an adversarial role. The task force’s decision came in a 2 1/2-hour meeting Wednesday morning attended by about three dozen community members.
The task force is composed of representatives from all sides of the debate, including environmentalists, public agencies and the Baldwin Co.
