PRO FOOTBALL / DAILY REPORT : RAIDERS : Shell Has Answer for Kingdome Noise

Share

Think of Seattle’s Kingdome and what is the first thing that comes to mind?

If you’re an opposing player, the answer is noise.

Kingdome fans have caused more than one opposing quarterback to throw up his hands in frustration because teammates could not hear the signals.

That problem will confront the Raiders on Sunday night when they face the Seahawks in their noise factory.

“Noise can be a distraction for you if you worry about it,” Raider Coach Art Shell said. “You know it’s going to be there, so don’t worry about it. You just have to contend with it. How you get them quiet is to put points on the board.”

The Raiders plan to provide extra security for quarterback Billy Joe Hobert this weekend in Seattle because threats reportedly have been made against him.

Hobert was at the center of a scandal for accepting loans while at the University of Washington last season. The scandal was one of several incidents that eventually resulted in penalties assessed against the school’s football program.

When quarterback Jeff Hostetler completed 15 consecutive passes against the Minnesota Vikings last Sunday, it was labeled a Raider record.

No information was immediately available, however, on the identity of the previous record-holder.

Further research has turned up the name Ken Stabler, who completed 14 consecutive passes in a 1973 game against the Baltimore Colts and 12 in a row in 1974 against the Detroit Lions.

Center Don Mosebar is listed as questionable for Sunday because of a groin injury. Offensive tackle Bruce Wilkerson (knee) and defensive lineman Chester McGlockton (toe) are listed as probable. The only Raider not expected to play is tailback Nick Bell, who is recovering from a hamstring injury.
