Student-designed T-shirts are being sold nationwide in stores like Bullocks, Macy’s, and Marshall Field’s to help fund schools’ shrinking art-education budgets. This fall, the program is expanding and several Orange County high schools are expected to be added to the current list of 65 member schools across the county. Designs for Education, the San Francisco-based company that manufactures the shirts, says $1 from every T-shirt sale goes back to the schools’ art and design budgets. Participating schools are expected to each get about $4,000 from the program this year. And the artists? Each student whose designs are produced gets $200; top-selling designs win scholarships up to $5,000. In the pilot program, 50 designs were selected from among 6,000 entries.
