United Way Needs Volunteers for Event

United Way of Ventura County is looking for volunteers to help paint, clean and spruce up community centers for its Fifth Annual Day of Caring on Saturday, said Sandy Slagle, the organization’s marketing director.

The Day of Caring will kick off the chapter’s 1993-94 fund-raising campaign, she said. This year’s fund-raising goal is $5.35 million, Slagle said. The United Way took in $5.3 million last year.

Saturday’s event will send volunteers to more than 20 sites throughout Ventura County where they will paint, landscape, wash vehicles, do minor carpentry and clean the interior and exterior of buildings, she said. As of Wednesday, United Way had signed up more than 400 of the 500 people needed for the cleanup, Slagle said.

Slagle urged volunteers to sign up in advance so that United Way, which will provide juice and muffins and a United Way T-shirt to each volunteer, knows how many people to plan for. The juice and muffins will be donated by the Oxnard Price Club.

The sites are Under One Roof and the Conejo Valley Botanical Park in Thousand Oaks; the Boys & Girls Clubs in Moorpark, Simi Valley and Port Hueneme; the American Diabetes Assn., the YMCA and several Pleasant Valley School District sites in Camarillo; Catholic Charities in Moorpark; Food Share and Cesar Chavez Elementary School in Oxnard; the Blanchard Library in Santa Paula; and the American Red Cross and Tres Condados Girl Scout Council in Ventura.
