What We Have Here Is a Failure . . . Oh, Forget It

On Labor Day morning, I opened The Times to read with delight the accomplishments of Joe Montana in the Kansas City Chiefs’ victory over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

“What a remarkable feat,” I said to my wife, “for a guy who hasn’t played much in the last three years.”

“He’s really old to still be playing, isn’t he?” she asked.

“No, not really. He’s about 37 or so and could probably play for another three years if he stays healthy.”

“Oh, you know what? I thought you were talking about Joe Namath.”

“No, Joe Montana .”

“Oh, the one who makes underwear commercials.”

And we wonder why we have football widows.
