COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Fullerton Gets First Women’s Soccer Victory

Jennifer Patterson scored off a direct kick in the second overtime to give Cal State Fullerton its first-ever women’s soccer victory, 2-1 over Azusa Pacific at Fullerton.

Amber Dickey scored Fullerton’s other goal on an assist from Dana Mariotti 23:49 into the first half to give the Titans (1-1-1) a 1-0 lead. Colleen Emry scored Azusa’s goal at 28:08 of the half.

Azusa Pacific is 2-2-1.

In the Jammin’ Invitational cross-country meet:

Killeen wins--Cal State Fullerton’s Heather Killeen ran to a 27-second victory in the college women’s race at Carbon Canyon Regional Park.

Killeen covered the 5,000-meter course in 17 minutes 43 seconds. Marisol Cossio of Cal State Los Angeles was second in 18:10.

Fullerton took fifth in the women’s race with 99 points. CSLA won the team title with 55.

Fullerton, led by Mike Tansley’s second-place finish, was third in the men’s college team race with 76 points. Tansley covered the 8,000 meters in 24:26, 13 seconds behind winner Muchapiwa Mazano of Utah State, which won the team title with 31 points.

Brian Johnson was sixth for Fullerton in 25:30.

In the men’s open race, Steve Frisone, running unattached, finished in 24:07, breaking the course record set by Tennessee’s Todd Williams by two seconds.

In Whittier Invitational cross-country:

SCC’s Pool sixth--Sophomore Nikee Pool of Southern California College was sixth in the women’s 5,000 meters in the meet at Ralph B. Clark Park.

Pool covered the distance in 20 minutes 6 seconds. Elizabeth Onyambu of Biola was first in 18:20.

SCC was sixth in the team race with 195 points to 62 for champion Claremont Mudd Scripps. For the men, sophomore Jason Schaefer ran four miles in 22:07 and improved on last year’s 40th-place finish for Southern California College, which was 14th in the team race with 359 points. Azusa Pacific’s A and B teams finished first and second with 22 and 89 points.

J.J. Castner of UC San Diego was the individual champion in 21:26.

In a nonconference water polo game:

Pacific 9, UC Irvine 4--Fourth-ranked UC Irvine was upset by No. 6 Pacific in the Anteaters’ opening game in Pacific Sports Federation play in Stockton. All-American Marc Hunt had two goals for Irvine.

In California tournament women’s volleyball at Berkeley:

Irvine splits--Undefeated San Diego rolled over the Anteaters, 15-8, 16-14, 15-4, 15-8, in an early match at Berkeley. Alison Bantel had 13 kills for UC Irvine. Jennifer Wrightson led San Diego with 18 kills.

In a later match, the Anteaters improved to 4-3 with a 15-12, 16-14, 15-11 victory over St. Mary’s. Alison Bantel had 20 kills and Popi Edwards 18 for Irvine.

In Asics Grand Prix women’s volleyball at San Diego:

Fullerton loses twice--Cal State Fullerton was defeated by San Diego State, 15-5, 15-5, 15-2, and Idaho State, 15-7, 15-8, 15-3.
