Ex-Chairman of Mercedes-Benz Dies: Werner Niefer, the former chairman of Mercedes-Benz who started with the luxury car-making company as an apprentice and rose through the ranks to become chairman died Sunday. He was 65. Niefer, who retired in May after 50 years with Mercedes-Benz, underwent surgery for lung cancer Aug. 27 and had been in intensive care at a Stuttgart hospital. The company said he died of complications from the operation.
