VENTURA : 4-Mile Walk to Raise Money for Alzheimer’s

Share

The Ventura County chapter of the Alzheimer’s Assn. will sponsor a four-mile Memory Walk on Sunday, Sept. 19, to raise money to help fight the crippling brain disorder.

Organizers hope to get as many as 500 people to participate in the fund-raiser, which will begin at 8 a.m. at the San Buenaventura State Beach parking lot.

Walkers, who are asked to get sponsors to pledge money for each mile walked, also are asked to pay a $10 registration fee.

“It’s the first annual Memory Walk in Ventura County,” said Yvette Bolton of the local Alzheimer’s Assn. chapter. “Every chapter nationally is hosting a walk within September or October.”

The Alzheimer’s Assn. operates as a referral service to other care-giving agencies but does not provide direct care itself, Bolton said.

Organizers said most of the funds raised will stay in Ventura County.

“The immediate need is to supply the primary family care giver with a break from the exhaustive 24-hour care often required for an Alzheimer’s victim,” said event chairman James Wortman.

“What’s great about this Memory Walk is that 85% of the monies raised, after expenses, stay right here in Ventura County for this care,” he said.
