BASEBALL / DAILY REPORT : ANGELS : Springer Looks Forward to Next Year

Starter Russ Springer wouldn’t wish this season on his worst enemy, but he’s optimistic that next year the Angels will finally reap the benefits of trading for him.

Springer, whose season ended because of a stress fracture in his back, was the lone starter acquired in the Jim Abbott trade. He will begin working out this week in an attempt to at least pitch a few innings during instructional league.

“I really feel I belong here, and I know I can carry the load, but now I have to prove it,” said Springer, who is 1-6 with a 7.20 earned-run average. “There’s no doubt I’ll be ready for next year, and I want everybody making decisions for next year to know I’ll be ready.”
