IRWINDALE : Plan for 1st Card Club in San Gabriel Valley Rejected
The Irwindale City Council has rejected a proposal to build the San Gabriel Valley’s first card club, but the developers have vowed to hit the streets with a petition drive to force a ballot initiative on the issue.
Backers of the proposed casino say they have been dealt a rotten--but not a losing--hand by council members, who expressed concern that a card club would bring crime and other undesired activity to the tight-knit community of about 1,000 residents.
State law requires that a majority of voters approve card clubs before they are allowed to operate in a community. City Council approval is not necessary, but the council could restrict the club’s operations through a gambling ordinance if the casino wins voter approval.
Backers of the club said they plan to collect the required 100 signatures to force an election.
