Two South Gate police officers on routine patrol shot a 14-year-old boy Wednesday night after the youth reportedly opened fire on them, authorities said.

The shooting occurred about 7:30 p.m. in the 8900 block of Elizabeth Avenue, said a spokesman for the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, whose investigators were sent to the scene.

The boy was taken to Martin Luther King Jr.-Drew Medical Center, but his condition was not disclosed.

Sheriff’s Sgt. Bob Stoneham said the two police officers heard shots as they neared the scene, and they got out of their patrol car to investigate. They spotted a youth standing near the street and said he shot at them. They returned the fire and said the youth backed up, then fired at least once more. The officers then shot again, striking the boy, Stoneham said.
