LOS ANGELES : $1.3 Million Donated for Public School Sports

Los Angeles Unified School District officials have accepted the first $1.3-million installment on a $10-million commitment by the Food 4 Less Foundation to fund athletics over the next three years.

The foundation has set up a public-private partnership called “Sports 4 All” to raise money for high school sports programs, including band and pep squads. The district was considering making deep cuts in the programs this year because of budget problems.

The foundation stepped forward last spring with a pledge to launch a fund-raising campaign to save the programs, which reach about 35,000 youths. It was one of the largest private donations ever made to the school district.

Prime Ticket, a regional cable sports network, became the first business to join the fund-raising drive, pledging to donate air time, employee volunteers and event sponsorships.
