Tourney Nets $65,000 for Scholarship Fund

National Hispanic Scholarship Fund received $65,000, net proceeds of the Paul Rodriguez Celebrity Golf Tournament held Aug. 9 at the MountainGate Country Club. Sponsors included Anheuser-Busch, Pepsi-Cola, Holiday Inn and Reebok. In 18 years, the fund, with the financial assistance of Anheuser-Busch, has provided scholarships to 21,000 students in the United States and Puerto Rico.

Cedars-Sinai Medical Center Pediatric AIDS Research/Clinical Care Program will receive $75,000 raised by the Fashion Industries Guild’s manufacturers’ charity sale of clothing and accessories. The fund-raiser was held Aug. 28 at the California Mart Exhibit Hall.

UCLA’s Division of Humanities will establish a scholarship program and provide for faculty research with $27,000 raised at the West Coast premiere Monday of Martin Scorsese’s “The Age of Innocence” at Creative Artists Agency. Guests at the benefit screening included L.A. Mayor Richard Riordan, Barbra Streisand, Dustin Hoffman, Candice Bergen, Marvin, Barbara and Nancy Davis and UCLA College of Letters and Science Provost Brian Copenhaver and James and Vicki Middleton.

Los Angeles Junior Chamber of Commerce Champions Foundation, with support from the Riviera Country Club, awarded four grants Aug. 13 to four nonprofit organizations: Inner-City Arts Center, $25,000 to refurbish and remodel a permanent facility; Hollenbeck Youth Center, $25,000 to purchase a van and to refurbish three other vans for inner-city youth programs; Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, $10,000 to establish a scholarship fund for minority students, and $1,500 to the Southern California PGA, which introduces golf to inner-city youth.

American Cancer Society will receive $7,100 raised at the Professionals Against Cancer “Casino Night” party Aug. 21. Attorney Roger Golden chaired the event at the Dodger Stadium Club. Proceeds will provide research, education and patient services.

Aviva Center received a $115,000 grant Aug. 13 from the Burton G. Bettingen Corporation. The center in Hollywood provides a residential treatment program for 36 teen-age girls as well as group and family therapy and high school education for its residents.

Hathaway Children’s Services Auxiliary raised $36,100 at its August “Evening in Tuscany” benefit party at the Beach Club in Santa Monica. Hathaway provides a residential treatment facility for abused, neglected and emotionally disturbed children. It also provides early intervention for troubled families and children.
