GLENDALE : New Associate Dean Selected by College

After a summer-long search, Glendale Community College officials Monday named an Oceanside college administrator as associate dean of student activities.

Paul Andre Schlossman, 31, of MiraCosta Community College, is expected to take over the post Oct. 15, said John A. Davitt, president of Glendale College.

Schlossman has been MiraCosta’s coordinator for school relations and minority outreach for the past four years. He worked with student leaders two years before that when he first came to the campus in 1987.

“He’s youthful, enthusiastic and we think he’ll bring a lot of energy in that position,” Davitt said. “Having somebody come from off campus is always refreshing.”

On Monday, Schlossman said he was looking forward to working with the Glendale college’s students and staff.

“I think that my role is to help students succeed,” he said. “I really believe that students should learn from their successes. . . . I’m there to share with the students and help them make some choices.”

The position became open July 1 after Associate Dean Jim Baugh requested a transfer back to his former job overseeing special projects. In response to the college’s statewide search for a replacement, 28 applications were submitted, officials said. The field was eventually narrowed down to three after a series of interviews by a nine-member search committee--two of whom were students.

Schlossman was selected last week by a three-member panel made up of Davitt, Nancy Knight, vice president of college services, and Glendale College District board member Ted Tiffany.

“I tried real hard to find out if this guy was too good to be true,” said student body President Mike Smith, one of the student representatives on the search committee. “He’s been tested already in administrative roles. . . . Everyone just felt good about this guy.”
