BASEBALL / DAILY REPORT : ANGELS : Magrane Agrees to Two-Year Deal

General Manager Whitey Herzog, determining that the Angels could not afford to lose starter Joe Magrane to free agency, reached a two-year contract agreement with the left-hander late Monday night, club sources confirmed.

Magrane, according to sources, agreed to sign a two-year contract with an option that will guarantee him at least $3.5 million, and could be worth about $6.3 million if he remains healthy the first two seasons.

The Angels are scheduled to make the announcement today in a news conference.

Magrane, 29, signed with the Angels on Aug. 20 after being released by the St. Louis Cardinals. He is 3-1 with a 3.44 earned-run average since joining the Angels.

The Angels attempted to acquire Magrane from the Cardinals in a trade before the All-Star break that would have sent starter Chuck Finley to St. Louis for stopper Lee Smith, third baseman Todd Zeile and Magrane. The Cardinals rejected the offer.

Hilly Hathaway has been told that his season is over. Hathaway (4-3, 5.02 ERA) was scratched from tonight’s start because of a strained shoulder. . . . Reliever Scott Lewis was informed that he will have to undergo arthroscopic surgery on his right shoulder.
