Labor Negotiations Shift to Chrysler: The United Auto Workers and Chrysler Corp. began intense talks toward a new three-year contract for more than 56,000 employees. The union did not set a deadline, but its president, Owen Bieber, said a time limit would be considered if the talks bog down. One potential sticking point is Chrysler’s practice of having most of its parts made by outside suppliers. To make up for the lack of parts workers at Chrysler, about 5,000 office, clerical and engineering workers at the No. 3 auto maker are members of the UAW.
