Shaun Coleman will pull double duty for Cal State Northridge Saturday night in its home opener against Sonoma State. Coleman, a 5-foot-10, 225-pound junior transfer from Saddleback College, will start at tight end and serve as backup fullback.

“Shaun is doing all right and hopefully, he’ll play well,” Northridge Coach Bob Burt said shortly after Coleman made several difficult catches in Wednesday’s practice.

Coleman has carried the ball once for one yard and caught one pass for no gain. His role had been confined because the Matadors’ recently scrapped run-and-shoot offense utilized a single running back and only occasionally employed a tight end.

Since starting tight end Chris Fregeau suffered a stress fracture in the first quarter of the second game, Northridge (0-3) has been restricted to one tight end, Travis Hall, a sophomore from Chaminade High.

Burt also said that Jason Camp will handle all kicking duties Saturday. Burt was pleased with Camp’s performance in CSUN’s 23-9 loss to Northern Arizona and the team’s other kicker, Matt Ornelaz, remains hampered by a sore quadriceps muscle.

Outside linebacker Ivy Calvin, who pulled a gluteus muscle returning a kickoff Saturday, will not return kicks against Sonoma State, although he will start on defense. Starting fullback Mark Harper will take Calvin’s place on kickoff returns.

Defensive captain Victor Myles missed his third practice of the week to be with his ailing father. Myles, the Matadors’ top defensive lineman, is expected to practice today and Friday and play Saturday.

Offensive left tackle Brian Hay was sidelined by a strained knee tendon, but is expected to be able to play against Sonoma State.
