Introduce a world-famous opera tenor who becomes indisposed, add someone to take his place, mix in some mistaken identity and the result is “Lend Me A Tenor,” a comedy opening tonight in the South Bay.

Palos Verdes Players, a nonprofit community theater group, is putting on the production with an all-volunteer cast that includes two Redondo Beach residents--Jonathan D. Weiss, who will play “Il Stupendo” opera star Tito Merelli, and Sylvia Deza in the role of Maria, Tito’s hot-blooded wife.

Others cast members are: John Vincent as Saunders, general manager of the Cleveland Grand Opera Company; Juliette Cummins as star-struck Maggie (Saunders’ daughter); Douglas Jacobs as Max (Saunders’ fretting assistant); Maxine Whittaker as Julia, chairman of the Opera Guild; Rose Leanore Dolfi as a seductive soprano and Rick Hoffman as a bellhop.

The play, directed by Tony Torrisi, will be staged at 8 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays and at 7 p.m. Sundays through Oct. 30.
