BASEBALL DAILY REPORT : AROUND THE MAJORS : Ryan’s Injury a Career-Ender

Nolan Ryan met with Texas Ranger team physician John Conway on Thursday, but his right elbow was so sore and swollen that the physician postponed the examination until next Tuesday.

Conway said that discussions with Ryan and Seattle team physician Larry Pedegana indicated Ryan has “a history and exam compatible with a torn ulnar collateral ligament.”

Conway confirmed that Ryan won’t pitch again this season, Ryan’s last in the major leagues.

A torn ulnar collateral ligament would require surgery and about one year of rehabilitation.

Ryan sustained the injury Wednesday night in Seattle against the Mariners. He walked off the mound with a 3-and-1 count on Dave Magadan after only 28 pitches.

It was only the third time in 773 career starts that Ryan failed to record an out.
