2-Day Festival to Honor Full Moon With Music, Food
According to the Chinese lunar calendar, the moon is farthest from Earth--and thus brightest and perfectly round--on the 15th day of the eighth lunar month.
For centuries, the Chinese have celebrated the day, which this year falls on Thursday, with the Chinese Lantern Festival, or Moon Festival. This is a time to mark the end of the summer harvest and gather with family and friends, eat “moon cakes” and share legends and tales of the moon while viewing the celestial body.
Chinatown’s version of the Moon Festival includes a street fair and a moon-viewing party next weekend.
Chinese opera, martial arts, and crafts demonstrations will be mixed with cultural performances by other ethnic groups at the street fair in the 800 block of North Broadway from noon to 6 p.m. Saturday and Oct. 3
Festival-goers can take in musical, dance, poetry, story-telling and crafts demonstrations by American Indian, African American, Latino and Korean groups.
The moon-viewing party will be from 7 to 10 p.m. Saturday at Central Plaza, in the 900 block of North Broadway.
