Entries for the fifth annual Orange County HIV/AIDS Awareness Poster Contest are being accepted by the Orange County chapter of the American Red Cross.

Amateur artists and professionals in art, advertising and graphic design who live, work or attend school in Orange County are encouraged to enter the contest to help increase community awareness about HIV and AIDS.

Judges will look for ideas or slogans in any language that incorporate educational messages to stop HIV infection and combat the AIDS epidemic.

Winning posters should promote concepts such as abstinence, postponing sexual involvement, prevention, risk reduction, community action and support for people who are living with the deadly disease, Red Cross officials said.

The deadline for entries is Nov. 15.

The contest is being held in conjunction with World AIDS Day, which is observed Dec. 1, the same day winners will receive awards at UC Irvine.

Last year’s winner was Carlos Magana, 18. He designed an image of two hands holding up the world, with the word SIDA ( AIDS in Spanish) superimposed.

His poster read in Spanish: “It’s time to join together because we are living in a world of AIDS.”

The poster is being reproduced and will be distributed to schools throughout the county.
