Coastline Community College President William M. Vega has been appointed to the board of directors of the American Assn. of Community Colleges. He is one of 32 college officials nationwide who make up the board.

The association, based in Washington, represents about 1,100 community colleges throughout the United States.

“Dr. Vega was appointed by the other board members to fill a one-year vacancy on the board,” said William Reinhard, spokesman for the American Assn. of Community Colleges.

“Dr. Vega has been very active with the National Community College Hispanic Council, which is an affiliate of the American Assn. of Community Colleges.”

Vega has been president of Coastline Community College since 1985. The so-called college without a campus is headquartered in Fountain Valley and offers college classes from an array of buildings in the northwest Orange County area.

Vega said colleges such as Coastline make courses available to the older, non-traditional students.

“The growing number of non-traditional students and their ever-increasing diversity creates special opportunities for community colleges as we move toward the 21st Century,” said Vega.

He added that the American Assn. of Community Colleges helps provide “support and guidance” to the two-year institutions of higher education.

Vega, who holds a doctorate in education from USC, is also on the board of directors of the Assn. of California Community College Administrators and serves on the American Bar Assn.’s Commission on Public Understanding About the Law.
