Good Color, a Little Chilly on the Nose

Watch out, Robert Mondavi. Home winemakers may not have access to the state’s best vineyards, but they can get grapes in the mail . . . frozen grapes. Peter Brehm, an Albany-based grape broker, has been marketing grapes for home winemakers since 1975. His best sellers are, of course, Chardonnay grapes, notably from the Sangiacomo ranch in Northern California’s famed Carneros district. Brehm also has good Gewurztraminer grapes from the Columbia River gorge, and smaller amounts of Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon.

Average price for the Carneros Chardonnay grapes is about $13 per gallon. One of the lower-priced grapes is Riesling, which sells for $8 per gallon.

Frozen grapes may be shipped to any address in North America. Call (510) 527-3675.
