Philips Unit to Produce Computer Screens: The company’s Display Components unit will invest $16 million to start producing the screens at its factory in Austria, making it the first European producer of computer screens. The screens, called color monitor tubes, “will meet fast-growing European demand,” the company said. Demand for the screens is expected to double from the present level of 2.5 million pieces a year to 5 million pieces by 1997. Production of the screens will start in the final quarter of 1994, “at which point Philips will become the only company manufacturing CMTs in Europe,” the statement said. To date, European demand has been served by imports from the Far East.
