EAST LOS ANGELES : Monday Hearing on School Funding

Share

Rep. Xavier Becerra (D-Los Angeles) will conduct a public hearing Monday on education, with special focus on how bilingual education and Chapter One programs serve the community.

Many teachers, administrators and parents have challenged the way the federal programs disburse money to local school districts, arguing that the methods are invalid because they rely on outdated census data, said Becerra’s field deputy, Cindy Aguirre.

The Chapter One and Title One programs target impoverished areas and school districts with a large population of students who speak little or no English.

“We want the funding to be equitable and it hasn’t been, because they’re using outdated information,” Aguirre said. “Also, the congressman wants the input of local people. Many times, we don’t get to hear the concerns of local people on federal issues.”

County Supervisor Gloria Molina, Los Angeles Unified School District board member Vickie Castro and Superintendent Sid Thompson are expected to attend the hearing, scheduled from 9:30 a.m. to noon at the Dorris Place Elementary School Auditorium, 2225 Dorris Place.
