Officers who allegedly broadcast love songs, made kissing sounds or mooed like cows on their police radios face criminal charges and could be fired, police said.

When the officers allegedly interrupted the department’s main radio channel, they blocked all other police calls.

“It could have meant somebody’s life out there,” said internal affairs Detective Jimmy Garcia.

Jose Arrojo, an attorney for the Police Benevolent Assn. who is representing five of the officers, said his clients deny the charges. They are charged with transmitting unauthorized communications on police radios, a misdemeanor. A sixth officer also was accused, but admitted his prank and was suspended for four months.

The officers often interrupted emergency police calls, including one in which a child was choking and the dispatcher couldn’t get on the radio because one of the officers was allegedly clicking his radio on and off, investigative records showed.

In another case, an officer was approaching a suspect hiding behind a truck. The dispatcher, trying to tell the officer that the suspect was armed with a gun and a knife, was blocked by another officer who blared portions of Natalie Cole’s “Unforgettable” into the radio--three times.

The officers also were accused of blowing kisses, breathing heavily or mooing into the radio. The mooing apparently insinuates someone was “milking a call,” or spending too much time at a crime scene.
