Atlanta Guide for African-Americans

When writer David Treadwell’s friends and colleagues headed for Atlanta, Ga., they besieged him with requests for tips on where to find the best soul food and the hottest jazz. He got so many questions, in fact, he decided to produce “Treadwell’s Insider Guide to African-American Atlanta.”

The pocket-sized laminated brochure lists Atlanta’s most popular black cultural attractions. Among the historic attractions spotlighted are the Martin Luther King Jr. historic district, the Atlanta University Center and the Herndon House, an imposing mansion designed and built by an ex-slave entrepreneur who became one of Atlanta’s wealthiest businessmen.

The guide also covers restaurants, night spots, galleries and shops. Listings include hours, addresses and telephone numbers.

“Black travelers typically are forced to rely heavily on word of mouth about the African-American attractions in the localities they’re visiting,” says Treadwell, a travel and history buff and a former Atlanta bureau chief for The Times. He plans similar brochures on New York, New Orleans, Washington and Chicago.

To order a copy of the guide, send a check or money order for $4.90 to Treadwell Travel Enterprises, 441 W. 24th St., 3rd Floor-T, New York, N.Y. 10011. Discounts are available for groups and fund-raisers.
