CSUN Ventura Sees Enrollment Rise 11%

Student enrollment has jumped 11% this semester at the Ventura Campus of Cal State Northridge, bucking a statewide trend of lagging public university enrollment.

In all, 1,308 people, most of them part-time students, have registered for fall classes at the satellite campus.

The surge in registration comes after an enrollment cap was lifted, which had been imposed to help reduce costs. The parent campus in Northridge is still under an enrollment cap.

But generous contributions from the Ventura County community and support from the parent campus allowed Ventura Campus to offer more classes this semester, said Joyce M. Kennedy, Ventura Campus director.

“We in Ventura County have turned a corner,” Kennedy said. “We are back on track.”

The Ventura Campus, created in 1974, meets in rented office space, at 2151 Alessandro Drive, Ventura. The campus offers upper division and graduate classes only. Cal State University officials plan to build a new four-year university on land west of Camarillo and north of the Ventura Freeway.

Students should be attending classes at the new campus by the turn of the century, officials have said.
