Texas Instruments Unveils Chip: The new computer chip is the first born of its partnership with Cyrix Corp. The 486SX processor chip, called Potomac, is built using internal operating code licensed from Cyrix, a small, 7-year-old semiconductor company. TI added some of its own modifications and will target the notebook and hand-held computer segments of the market. The chip will compete with 486 chips sold by Intel Corp. and Advanced Micro Devices Inc. It is expected to be widely available in January. Investors clobbered Cyrix’s stock, which fell $2.125 to $22 on the Nasdaq market, on concern that Cyrix’s royalties from TI will drop when the new chip comes out. Previously, TI licensed Cyrix technology and sold the chips under the TI name.
