A tip prompted officials Friday to search marshland near where 12-year-old Polly Klaas was abducted last week, but investigators found no new leads, the FBI said.

The California Highway Patrol spent four hours searching the area near the intersection of California Highways 37 and 121 in Sonoma County after the FBI got a tip that there was information there related to the case, said Rick Smith, spokesman for the bureau in San Francisco.

“We have no viable suspect, no ransom note, no demands and we haven’t located the child,” Smith said.

He would not say why investigators felt the tip, made through the television show “America’s Most Wanted,” should be pursued, except to say it was “viable enough.”

Polly was abducted a week ago from her Petaluma home as she and two friends played a board game and her mother slept in a room nearby. Police believe the kidnaper entered the home through an unlocked door or window.

Once inside, he drew a knife and tied and gagged the three girls. He asked, “Who lives here?” before taking Polly.
