COMMERCE : City Awarded Prize for Latino Support
The Mexican American Opportunity Foundation has awarded the city the 26th annual Aztec Award in recognition of its contributions to the Latino community.
This is the first time a city has received the award, which was scheduled to be presented at the foundation’s annual banquet Friday at the Century Plaza Hotel in Century City.
“Commerce is a city that goes to bat for the Hispanic community,” foundation President Dionicio Morales said. The city has encouraged local businesses to hire Latino youths and has helped the foundation establish child-care centers, among other projects, he said.
Commerce’s population of 12,300 is about 93% Latino, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.
Sears, Roebuck & Co. and the city of Pico Rivera also received 1993 Aztec awards. The retailer was honored for its donations of clothing and financial support after last year’s riots. Pico Rivera was recognized as the home of the nonprofit foundation, which was founded in 1952.
