Temple City : Foundation Land Rezoned

Share

The City Council has approved a controversial proposal to extend Camelia Avenue and build eight single-family homes on part of a site owned by an education foundation.

Tuesday’s council decision will allow the Pacific Ackworth Foundation to sell two acres at 6210 Temple City Blvd. to finance the reopening of Pacific Ackworth Elementary School on an adjacent 2.5 acres.

Council members voted 3 to 2 in favor of rezoning the area from institutional to single-family use and to extend Camelia Avenue north into a cul-de-sac.

Council members Thomas Brezeal, Cathe Wilson and Harry Budds voted for the project; Mayor Mary L. Manning and Councilwoman Bobbie McGowan dissented.

Some community activists urged the city to buy the property for a park. They argued that the city has only two parks and that the property is the last large parcel of privately owned land in the city.

Officials said the city could not afford to buy the property, and the foundation has said it does not want to sell the entire parcel.
