$66,000 Raised for the L.A. Free Clinic

Friends of the Los Angeles Free Clinic raised $66,000 at its “Fantastica ‘93” benefit Sept. 18 at Pacific Design Center. Proceeds will fund free medical and dental care, psychological counseling and legal assistance to the needy. Barbara Yaroslavsky was chairwoman.

The American Diabetes Assn. held its “Boot Scootin’ Caper” Sept. 18 at Culver Studios and netted $88,000. The Western-style gala featured Bette Midler, Garry Shandling and Carlene Watkins Weinberger, with Bob Saget as master of ceremonies. Co-chairs were Elaine Binder Robinson and Linda Berghoff.

Options House netted $55,000 Sept. 11 at its “S.S. Options House” fund-raiser at Paramount Pictures, which helped underwrite the event. Proceeds will provide funding for the Taft Avenue shelter and a new shelter for children. Leslie Forbes is executive director.

Long Beach Museum of Art raised $20,000 at its three-day “Art in Bloom” benefit. The event was sponsored by Phoenix, a support group. Proceeds will benefit the museum’s exhibition and education programs. Jean Bader and Leslie Carson were co-chairs.

South Bay Free Clinic raised $2,500 at its Aug. 14 golf tournament at the Warner Springs Ranch near San Diego. Proceeds will go toward purchase of medical equipment for the Manhattan Beach facility.

The Museum of Contemporary Art received a $15,000 grant Sept. 22 from the Metropolitan Life Foundation. The grant is for Contemporary Art Start, a museum education program that introduces art and culture to elementary- and secondary-school students and teachers.

The American Cancer Society received $4,500 from the Aug. 30 “Casino Night” at Club Shelter in Pasadena. The benefit was hosted by Young Professionals Against Cancer. Proceeds will help provide research, education and patient services.

The Manny Mota International Foundation’s “Campo de Suenos” (Field of Dreams) Awards Banquet held Aug. 29 at the Sheraton Grande was attended by more than 600 guests. Honorees included Dodger Eric Karros, former Dodger VP Al Campanis and others. Net proceeds of $75,000 will help feed and educate needy children in the United States and the Dominican Republic.

Inner-City Arts Center received a $25,000 donation Sept. 13 from the Los Angeles Junior Chamber of Commerce. The money will help refurbish and remodel a permanent facility to be named after the center’s largest donor, the Mark Taper Forum. Inner-City Arts, in the Skid Row area of downtown, provides programs to 4,300 children.

People Assisting the Homeless received notice Sept. 27 of a $10,000 grant from the S. Mark Taper Foundation. The gift will help underwrite construction of counseling offices at PATH’s new center on the Westside. The 30-bed facility is scheduled to open in mid-October.
