College Segregation

Share

* Clarence Page’s column points to a growing trend on college campuses of students forming cultural and ethnic cliques, which he labels segregation (“Students Who Shun Diversity Cheat Themselves,” Commentary, Sept. 30).

While Page believes that colleges never were desegregated, he cheats the readers from the truth as he dodges the question why resegregation is occurring in the first place. Instead, Page portrays the minorities who advocate self-empowerment as racist and segregationist, and places the burden of racial bigotry on non-blacks.

When will we, as a people, begin to be responsible for our actions and prejudices? When will we realize that our nation, by law, can no longer judge people by the color of their skin but indeed by the content of their character?

Perhaps it is out of a real need to redefine the content of one’s character that has led a generation of youths deprived of its culture and ethnicity, through its struggle for equality, to find a purpose in their ancestors’ culture and people.
