7.1 Quake Shakes Tokyo; Woman Killed, 2 Hurt
A strong earthquake beneath the Pacific Ocean measuring 7.1 in magnitude shook Tokyo early today, killing a woman and injuring two others, news reports said.
The woman, a 64-year-old Tokyo resident with a serious heart condition, collapsed when she tried to leave her house following the quake, NHK television reported. She died in a hospital.
The temblor, which struck after midnight, rattled most of northern Japan, but seismologists said the epicenter was in the Pacific Ocean about 250 miles south of Tokyo, too far away to cause serious damage.
