LBCC Asks to End At-Large Voting

Share

Officials at Long Beach City College this week asked the Los Angeles County Board of Education to allow the college to switch from at-large trustee elections to district elections without submitting the plan to a vote.

The county board delayed its decision until the county’s Committee on School District Organization approves the proposed boundaries for the city college districts.

The proposal to elect five trustees from districts rather than at-large is aimed at adding minorities to a board that has been all-Anglo since it was established 15 years ago.

College officials said the measure would add nearly $30,000 to the cost of the school board election scheduled in April.
