‘Lagomarsino’ Gains as Park Center Name

A proposal to rename the Channel Islands National Park visitors center after former Rep. Robert J. Lagomarsino (R-Ventura) cleared a major hurdle Wednesday when it was passed by the House Natural Resources Committee. The measure now goes to the House floor for approval.

“Bob Lagomarsino worked long and hard to bring the Channel Islands into our national park system,” said Rep. Elton Gallegly (R-Simi Valley), the measure’s sponsor and a Lagomarsino protege. “Without his perseverance, I think it’s safe to say that the islands would not be protected today.

“It’s only fitting that the visitor center at Ventura Harbor be named after Bob.”

Lagomarsino, who lost a reelection bid last year after serving nine terms, rose to the position of ranking Republican on the Natural Resources’ subcommittee on National Parks and Public Lands. He pushed legislation to establish the Channel Islands park in 1980 and was instrumental in obtaining funds to buy properties on the islands from private land owners.
