WESTMINSTER : District Will Sell Midway Elementary

The Westminster School District will sell Midway City Elementary School to a developer for $3.5 million and use the money for badly needed maintenance projects at other schools, officials said.

The nine-acre Midway City campus, closed earlier this year, will be sold to Kaufman & Broad South Coast Division. The company plans to build 73 single-family homes on the site, said district spokeswoman Audrey Brown.

The school, at 8521 Hazard Ave., was built in 1947 and deteriorated over the decades. The Board of Trustees voted to close the school and sell it as surplus property in April.

In September, the district also approved the sale of a portion of Willis Warner Middle School, 14171 Newland St., to the city redevelopment agency for $2 million. Redevelopment officials have said that area will be home to a park, a city building or a combination of the two.

The income from the sale of Midway City and the 3.8-acre portion of Warner will pay for improvements to classrooms, offices and playgrounds throughout the district, Brown said.

She added that “the district already has a dozen projects lined up which we need this money for. We have a master plan of all of the things that need to be done to make campuses perfect, and the cost to do that is $30 million, so every little bit helps.”
