LEIMERT PARK : West Point Honors Audubon School

Share

In a recent campus ceremony, West Point representatives honored Audubon Middle School for being one of 14 schools selected to participate in the U.S. Military Academy’s 1993-94 Spotlight School program.

Junior high and high schools across the nation are chosen annually for the program, which selects schools based on “commitment to excellence”--high academic standards, community involvement, success of graduates and other factors. The other Los Angeles-area school chosen was Taft High in Woodland Hills, long recognized for its success in academic decathlon competitions.

In addition to receiving a certificate of recognition, Audubon will be visited during the year by West Point admissions officers and cadets--from the Crenshaw area, if possible. A Military Academy faculty member will meet with teachers and counselors and teach a special class to inform students of educational opportunities available to them after high school, whether at West Point or elsewhere.

“We were pretty surprised, but very pleased to be chosen,” said Audubon Assistant Principal Barbara Rickett. “It’s yet another affirmation of the exceptionally high quality of this school.”
