VENTURA : Races, Walk to Raise Funds for Libraries

Share

Organizers of the 1993 Roads Scholars Race on Sunday are looking for people willing to walk or run at least a mile to help benefit school libraries in the city of Ventura.

Competitive 10-kilometer (6.2-mile) and five-kilometer races will be held for both runners and wheelchair contestants, with the starting and finishing lines at downtown’s Mission Park.

A non-competitive mile run and walk will also be held for children and adults.

Susan Pollack, a registered nurse with two children in the Ventura Unified School District, said she came up with the idea when her son, Mason--a fifth-grader at Poinsettia Elementary--checked out a science book from the school library. “The book said that someday man will go to the moon,” Pollack said about the vintage text that predated the 1969 Apollo landing. “It’s really sad our schools don’t have the money to buy the educational tools they need.”

With the help of friends Denise Abdun-Nur, a teacher, and Rob Fukutomi, Pollack found quick support for the fund-raiser among Ventura residents.

The idea has mushroomed, with a dozen Ventura businesses each contributing $2,000 in cash or services to co-sponsor the event. The corporate headquarters of Kinko’s has contributed $15,000 and provided printing.
