ARM OF THE LAW: Female faces are much more common in police uniforms than they once were, but the Women’s Advisory Council to the L.A. Police Commission isn’t happy. The commission’s upcoming report complains that a “culture of gender bias” values male strength over female negotiating skills in dealing with troublemakers (B1). The commission wants a 44% female force with a philosophy of “brains over brawn.”. . . No comment yet from the chief.

Under a $100-million contract from Stanford, the Calabasas company is building a spacecraft to examine Einstein’s theory of relativity, which explains the basic workings of the universe. . . .
