CANCUN : Toward a Free Market

As the U.S. Congress prepares to debate the North American Free Trade Agreement that would gradually eliminate commercial barriers among the United States, Mexico and Canada, international business leaders already see the accord as a model.

The theme of the International Chamber of Commerce’s annual congress starting Wednesday at this Mexican resort: “The Global Move to the Free Market: The Example of the Americas.”

Government officials and business leaders will discuss the effects of a more open world economy on the environment, labor and corporate responsibility. They will also examine steps such as privatization that developing countries must take in moving toward a free-market economy.
